Welding Education Goes Robotic

February 2025

SP Elements’ collaboration with Smooth Robotics and Kempii has helped New College Lanarkshire to revolutionise welding education through its Smart Hub initiative. By integrating cutting-edge technologies like cobot welding, the college equips students with in-demand skills for modern fabrication.

Recognising the growing need for automation, the college invested in Universal Robots, collaborative robots, Smooth Robotics, and SmoothTool welding systems. The introduction of SmoothTool provides students with hands-on experience in programming and operating these robots. The intuitive SmoothTool interface allows students without robotics experience to grasp automation concepts quickly.

The college also serves as a hub for local businesses, allowing them to experience cobot welding and assess its suitability for their operations. This strengthens the connection between education and industry, helping local manufacturers stay competitive.

New College Lanarkshire is pioneering the use of augmented reality in welding training through the Soldamatic simulator. The recent integration of SmoothTool with Soldamatic will allow students to combine cobot welding with AR-based training, providing a safe and interactive learning environment.

Strong partnerships between SP Elements, Smooth Robotics and Kemppi UK help to support these advancements. Through innovative education and collaboration, New College Lanarkshire is shaping the future of welding, making it smarter, safer, and more efficient.
