Mechanical Design Engineer
(NO AGENCIES PLEASE)
The Role
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will contribute to the design and development of innovative, high‑performance automation equipment used in demanding and highly regulated industries. Reporting to the Design Manager, you will work as part of a collaborative, multi‑disciplinary engineering team, developing concepts, producing detailed designs, and supporting projects from early design through build and commissioning.
This role suits someone who enjoys problem‑solving, creativity, and continuous learning. You do not need to come from automation or medical/pharma — we welcome candidates from any engineering discipline with solid mechanical design foundations and a willingness to grow.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Development
- Develop creative and effective mechanical design concepts for automated machinery and engineered solutions.
- Produce 3D CAD models and assemblies in SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar tools.
- Create clear, accurate 2D drawings, layouts, and general arrangements.
- Consider materials, manufacturing methods, tolerances, ergonomics, and design constraints appropriate to precision equipment.
- Work within regulatory, functional, and safety requirements, particularly relevant to high‑spec industries.
Project Delivery
- Collaborate with electrical, controls, robotics, and software teams to deliver integrated engineering solutions.
- Generate Bills of Materials (BOMs), part lists, and manufacturing documentation.
- Support machine build, testing, FAT, SAT, and commissioning activities.
- Assist in resolving design challenges during assembly and machine development.
Customer & Supplier Interaction
- Participate in design reviews, project discussions, and client meetings to understand technical requirements.
- Work with suppliers to identify suitable components, materials, and manufacturing processes.
Compliance & Quality
- Ensure designs align with relevant standards, safety requirements, and internal procedures.
- Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to quality processes and traceability.
Continuous Improvement
- Suggest improvements to design approaches, standardisation, modularity, and internal processes.
- Provide early‑stage design concepts, costing input, and engineering insight for proposals.
Requirements
Essential
- Mid-senior experience, with 3-5 years’ experience within a similar role
- Experience in mechanical design, product development, engineered solutions, or a related technical field (experience does not need to come from automation).
- Good working proficiency with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar). High expertise is not required — sound fundamentals and willingness to learn are key.
- Understanding of mechanical design principles and engineering fundamentals.
- Ability to translate ideas into practical concepts and drawings.
- A proactive, curious, and coachable mindset with strong problem‑solving abilities.
- Effective communication skills and confidence working within multidisciplinary teams.
- Competence in Microsoft Office.
Desirable
- Exposure to automation, robotics, machinery design, or engineered systems.
- Experience in medical device, pharmaceutical, scientific, or other regulated industries.
- Experience working within project-based companies and project delivery
- Adhering to budgets, project milestones, and commercially astute
- Awareness of manufacturing methods, materials, and design‑for‑manufacture practices.
- Understanding of motion control, robotics, or vision systems (helpful but not essential).
- Knowledge of hygienic design, cleanroom considerations, or precision engineering environments.
General Expectations
- Willingness to learn, develop, and adapt within a fast‑moving SME environment.
- Commitment to a clean, organised, and safe working environment.
- Respect for quality processes, safety principles, and regulatory expectations — with training provided as needed.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, suppliers, and clients.
- A positive attitude, initiative, and enthusiasm for continuous improvement and engineering excellence.
