Bespoke Vacuum Pick-up

The tooling is required to pick up carbon strips with lengths varying between 100mm and 530mm, which are held on a seven position nest.

There are five heads with independent vacuum cups that turn on depending on the length of the strip to be picked.

The robot arm then presents the strips to a vision system for a dimension check before placing them onto a vacuum bed at a variety of positions and angles.

Each head also contains three heat stake pins which use cartridge heaters to generate a temperature of up to 450 degrees celsius.

These have spring loaded covers which will move out of the way when the strips are placed so that the robot can weld the strip to the layer below.

As it is the e-version of the UR, there is force feed back available from the tooling head which is used to control how hard the staking pins are pressed onto the material.

The process is repeated until a panel of up to 48 layers has been created from the carbon strips.
