Speeding Up CNC Machine Tending with RG2 Dual Grippers at FT-Production, Sweden

This is an OnRobot company case study regarding CNC Machine Tending.

CNC Machine Tending. FT-Produktion supplies metal parts to global industry leaders such as Volvo, Renault, and Scania and depends on automation to help meet growing customer demand in a tight labour market. With 650 different aluminium profiles, production runs ranging from five to 150,000 units, and 7,000 orders annually, flexible automation is essential. A robotic cell featuring two OnRobot RG2 grippers cuts cycle time nearly in half, enabling a run of 150,000 units to be manufactured in less than two months, saving 500 worker hours.

Labour-saving

“The demand for productivity continues to grow. But it is hard to come by the relevant workforce these days. Thanks to automation, an operator can keep three or four machines running at once without stress.” Joakim Karlberg, co-owner, FT-Produktion.

Fast ROI

“We chose a combination of solutions from OnRobot, Universal Robots, and EasyRobotics because they are easy to program, and the investment will pay for itself in just nine months. It’s one of the best business decisions we’ve ever made.” Joakim Karlberg, co-owner, FT-Produktion.

Easy to Program

“Using the robots was more intuitive than I expected. The cobot solution is so easy to reconfigure that even small production runs are no longer cost-prohibitive. Plus, it just makes my job so much more interesting.” Mikael Andersson, machine technician, FT-Production.

Results

  • ROI in 9 months
  • Higher volume, shorter delivery, no overtime
  • Cycle time cut by 12 seconds, nearly in 1/2
  • Changeovers in 10 seconds
  • Robotic cell runs 16 hours/day, 5 days/week
